What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is an inflammatory skin condition that causes itching and excessive peeling of the surface of the scalp.

It is usually caused by a fungus called Pityrosporum ovale (P.ovale), inhabitant of the scalp. It grows very well in an environment rich in lipids, namely the scalp, face, chest and back. It is dysfunction of the sebaceous glands were causing conditions for rapid multiplication of the fungus and the result is the appearance of small flakes - dander.

Dandruff is a combination of factors, activated by the naturally occurring fungus called Malassezia. The various species are a prerequisite for other skin diseases in humans. Malassezia globosa (M. globosa), is generally located in the lipid-rich areas like the scalp, face, chest and back. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis affect more than half the adult population and all ethnic groups worldwide.

Normally, over time, old skin cells constantly die and are shed in order to be replaced by new skin cells. This process takes place so slowly that it remains almost invisible.

Dandruff occurs when dead skin cells fall and replacing with new starts to accelerate. For most people, the scalp is usually renovates once a month, but for people with dandruff this process occurs 10-15 days and in some cases even for a shorter period (for people with serious dandruff  known as seboreic dermatitis -seborrea).
